Ballon d’Or 2019 LIVE: Lionel Messi beats Virgil van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo to win record sixth prize

At a Paris event, Lionel Messi won a historic sixth crown of the Ballon d'Or. The Barcelona star moved ahead of great rival Cristiano Ronaldo to take over the record, seeing Virgil Van Dijk from Liverpool and Ronaldo from Juventus.

The Argentine scored 54 goals in the 2018-19 season for the club and country.

The 32-year-old held off Holland's center-back challenge, Van Dijk, whose talismanic performances helped Liverpool to win the title of the Champions League.

Messi added another Ballon d'Or in 2019 to the Best FIFA Men's award, while Van Dijk from Liverpool claimed the Men's Player of the Year from UEFA.
Van Dijk might have been the first defender to win the Ballon d'Or since Fabio Cannavaro from Italy in 2006, but Messi scuppered the chances of the Liverpool man.

We can't say much about Messi that's new, except that he now owns a record of six Ballon d'Or trophies. I'm sure he'll be delighted with his old friend, Cristiano Ronaldo, who owns five but isn't here tonight. His 2019 highlights reel is predictably amazing, though I feel I've seen all of those goals a hundred times before. So many free-kicks, so many scoops, so many closed finishes.
